Rice Makes an Impression

April 22nd, 2005 at 10:56 Björn Hallberg

Though perhaps not what she had hoped. Total Misunderstanding? Can Condoleezza Rice speak Russian?

Rice made several unprecedented statements. She, in fact, admitted that the US will start to inspect Russian nuclear facilities. The Secretary of State demanded Putin resignation in 2008. She also hinted that Byelorussia is to expect Orange Revolution and Russia a bright future. Her Russian counterparts pretended stubbornly that they didnt hear anything.

Condoleezza Rice and her interviewer in the studio of Echo Moskvy didnt understand each other even when discussing the only non-political question. Alexei Venediktov asked the state secretary if she is going to run for president in 2008. Da (Yes) she said in Russian, but then immediately realized that she most likely misunderstood the question. She hurried to correct herself and said the word Nyet (No) seven times.

Verbal gaffes aside, Rice seems to have her conservative mind set. The arrogant tone that she strikes obviously upsets people. And the facts that she presents continue to be of questionable quality. For example, state-owned is suddenly a bad thing in journalism. As opposed to the ‘good’ US journalism that is operated by the likes of Rupert Murdoch.

Timothy Bancroft-Hinchey, Pravda editorial staff and author of the Pravda article above notes that …

For the information of Condoleezza Rice, who despite being Secretary of State of her country, continues to demonstrate an ignorance of world affairs at a shockingly consistent level, the notion that the Kremlin exerts a grip on the media is a fairy tale invented in the gardens of Washington. As correspondent of the English version of Pravda.Ru, director and chief editor of the Portuguese version and collaborator for three other Russian publications, two of these being official media organs, I have frequently asked for guidelines from the Kremlin on what line to follow.

The answer: "We are afraid we cannot give you any guidelines as you request. You will have to write the truth, after checking your sources, obviously", or words to this effect every time the question is posed.

Also, even more importantly …

For the information of Ms. Rice, since her State Department is evidently unable or unwilling to inform her, the actions by the Kremlin are reactions to a situation which places the State of Russia in danger, namely independence trends fanned and fuelled by those who wish to get their hands on Russia’s resources. Therefore the Kremlin has to ensure that Russia’s wealth is protected by the State, guaranteeing that the resources of the Russian Federation are enjoyed by its citizens, not those of foreign countries.

In many parts of the world, the UK (BBC) and Sweden (SVT, SR) for instance, public service — or state-owned media — is held in high esteem. At the end of the day it works just as well, probably better, than Fox, CNN and whatever they have in the US. Does the state sometimes interfere? Yes, just like they do with private media. But the fact that their is little or no profit involved does make for better reporting in state media. Just look at what has come out of the BBC in terms of documentaries.
But obviously, in Corporate America, state ownership is taboo. There is no profit in that.

It has been a long year. The author is currently biding his time. Lets just say the journal is on a prolonged and much needed vacation. In the meantime you can be sure that I’m watching you all. I guess that at some point I will get so angry that I will in fact have to write something.
