Will US be asked to leave key military bases?

July 6th, 2005 at 16:59 Björn Hallberg

Via Agonist. Well, they can ask, and the US will most likely remove the bulk of its force but it is enough to look to history to realize that the US will never relinquish a base that they deem to be of strategic and geopolitical significance. Ever.

Meeting in the Kazakh capital of Astana, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) - which includes Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, China, and Russia - issued a joint statement saying the active military phase of the Afghan operation was coming to an end and calling on the US-led coalition to agree to a deadline for ending the temporary use of bases and air space in member countries.

And indeed, it is inadmissible to monopolize or dominate international affairs. The US influence over Central and SE Asia remains troublesome. It’s good to see that someone brought this much overlooked base proliferation to the top of the agenda and put their foot down, finally.
