Judy Miller Jailed For Failing To Give Up Source

July 7th, 2005 at 20:47 Björn Hallberg

Very interesting indeed.

Will the jailing of New York Times reporter Judy Miller scare people off from risking careers to tell reporters about government misdeeds? Or will Miller’s willingness to sit behind bars rather than name a confidential source embolden such whistleblowers?

Well, as the AP writer points out a couple of paragraphs down, this is not a case of whistleblowing. It’s personal vengeance. To even suggest anything else is a grave bias.

Judy Miller has long been a tool for the US regime, a lapdog exaggerating WMD claims before and after the Iraq invasion. She’s quite the apparatchik. Either doing time to avoid ending up in a back alley dumpster or in fact because she is such a patriot and actually believes that not revealing the person who compromised US national security actually promotes national security. But hey, it’s not treason if the political elite does it. Some double standards. But it is a hallmark of the United States both at home and abroad.

Joseph Wilson had this to say about Miller’s demise.

Clearly, the conspiracy to cover up the web of lies that underpinned the invasion of Iraq is more important to the White House than coming clean on a serious breach of national security. Thus has Ms Miller joined my wife, Valerie, and her twenty years of service to this nation as collateral damage in the smear campaign launched when I had the temerity to challenge the President on his assertion that Iraq had attempted to purchase uranium yellowcake from Africa.

David Galbraith
notes that Miller has not been quite so unbending in the past.

Would someone who has previously disclosed sources for personal gain refuse to do so for personal loss?

It has been a long year. The author is currently biding his time. Lets just say the journal is on a prolonged and much needed vacation. In the meantime you can be sure that I’m watching you all. I guess that at some point I will get so angry that I will in fact have to write something.
