The NATO Zombie That Just Won’t Die

December 11th, 2005 at 12:15 Björn Hallberg

Jose Maria Aznar didn’t quite get it in his interview with UPI a couple of weeks ago. But we are nearing the Pudels Kern as it were. For in line with Faust, we are tempted by a Mephisto that promises anything and will take on any form, invent any enemy in order to justify itself. He did get one thing right however. NATO is no contender with the UN and was never intended to be one. By all accounts, NATO should not even exist in the present day and age. But like all daemons, when conjured, they are difficult to undo.

In fact, since the whole Yugoslavia debacle, things have gotten much worse and NATO is not only brought back to life but in fact unfettered by boundaries.

UPI - Since Kosovo, the 26-member alliance has not just gone out of area, it has gone out of Europe altogether. It leads the 16,000-strong International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan, is training Iraqi officers outside Baghdad and helping the African Union airlift troops and equipment to the Darfur region of Sudan.

The US of course is ecstatic about this turn of events. And why wouldn’t they be. NATO is inherently slanted towards America and NATO is time and again ending up doing their bidding. And not just in terms of primary military functions but also with bases, support functions and lately unlimited rendition flights over allied territory.

“I can remember when the Soviet Union was breaking up and the Warsaw Pact went out of existence in 1989-1990, people asked whether NATO had a future,” Rice told reporters Thursday. “Some 16 years later, we now know the answer to that question. NATO not only has a future, it has a very bright future. It is fulfilling its historic function of being a place where democracies gather to ensure their security, and in doing so to increase the prospects for a secure world.”

Of course, the neoconservative / neo-liberal / libertarian / whatever convenient ideology they profess corroded their brains it seems. The main fallacy in this argument, which we have also heard from John Bolton as of late, is that the international arena is up for grabs and subject to market economy forces. So NATO is now an alternative to the UN. And they don’t see the problem. I wonder how they would feel if one were to set up a shadow government in the US, buying up districts and bombing the state, because the official state wasn’t doing one’s bidding. I wonder if that too would appease their slow-witted notion of the free market of politics and international affairs. The idea of promoting a MILITARY organization, like NATO that only a few are members of is counterintuitive. There can be no solution besides the UN. And the US / NATO is knowingly being an obstruction to that end. If indeed we even want to go beyond the nation state, but I will assume for the time being that we do and that we need to.

Oh and we’ve all seen Zombie horror flicks. The only way to kill a zombie is to inflict major brain trauma. And we all know where that head is located in reality. Until we do, the “living dead” will walk the earth, spread their selective interventions, their militarism, their fear mongering and undermine the legitimate choice for a positive world order.

It has been a long year. The author is currently biding his time. Lets just say the journal is on a prolonged and much needed vacation. In the meantime you can be sure that I’m watching you all. I guess that at some point I will get so angry that I will in fact have to write something.
