US plans to ‘fight the net’ revealed

January 28th, 2006 at 08:01 Björn Hallberg

The US uses its resources to conduct global psyops.

BBC - A newly declassified document gives a fascinating glimpse into the US military’s plans for “information operations” - from psychological operations, to attacks on hostile computer networks.

Bloggers beware.

Perhaps the most startling aspect of the roadmap is its acknowledgement that information put out as part of the military’s psychological operations, or Psyops, is finding its way onto the computer and television screens of ordinary Americans.

And that is supposed to be a bad thing from the elite’s perspective? Surely, pacifying the US public, overcoming the “multicultural divide” as some have imagined it, is more crucial still than futile attempts to convince the enemy. Or indeed friendly powers. So no surprise here.

Obviously, steering clear of these psyops seems easy for the most part. The trick is largely never to take anything positive about the US or its conduct and policies at face value. But it also requires a certain knowledge about the world to understand America’s geopolitical goals and allies. Favourable reporting and propaganda on soft and colorful revolutions in Ukraine and Lebanon are candidates for such psyops in its most basic form.
This also brings us to a huge blowback with this strategy. The fact that Americans get the same message is just an added bonus obviously. But imagine what happens once people, at least internationally, and surely in areas where one is already sceptical to the sincerity of the US, start to think that whatever the corporate media says the opposite is true. Now that is a psyop in itself. And perhaps part of the grand plan, if we are to believe that the people behind this plot are actually that clever. We have seen in the past that the US imperial command has done everything in their power to blur some fairly sacred lines in society. Planting blunt stories in the press of occupied nations for instance. And more dire still, “winning the hearts and minds” by taking upon themselves to carry out humanitarian aid, thus blurring the line between national combat units and international humanitarian NGOs. While it at first might seem like poor judgement, the pattern is starting to become very clear. Especially when one considers the vast animosity the US has for international cooperation on an equal basis. Not to mention the rejection and legitimate criticism from the same NGOs. And the media, while for the most part sympathetic to the rulers and to power in general, has not lived up to just being a mouthpiece.

It has been a long year. The author is currently biding his time. Lets just say the journal is on a prolonged and much needed vacation. In the meantime you can be sure that I’m watching you all. I guess that at some point I will get so angry that I will in fact have to write something.
