Of course, John Correa has already fled the country, though Washington maintains that he is on “holiday” and medical treatment.
Donald Rumsfeld was quoted as saying this about the “left-wing” trend in the region …
[Chavez] is a person who was elected legally, just as Adolf Hitler was elected legally and then consolidated power. Now [Chavez] is of course working closely with [Cuban President] Fidel Castro and [Bolivian President Evo] Morales and others. It concerns me.
Talking about the dubious claims of Hitler being democratically elected … What concerns me is another warmongering bonapartist emperor that was too “legally” elected, and re-elected, in a nation that has been working closely with about every autocrat that would do its bidding and every right-wing regime in the last century, with murderous results.
The uncompromising, and frankly unintelligent, view that Adolf Hitler came to power in a strict democratic fashion belies historic fact. I will just chalk this one up as a silent, and subconscious, omission of guilt and perverted view of democracy on Rumsfeld’s part.
