Cronyism and Corruption; Wolfowitz at the World Bank Those that thought having Paul Wolfowitz stowed away at the World Bank would make us any safer, and pointed out that he was the “good” neo-conservative, the result so far is a complete disaster. Cronyism has never been as dangerous, because in Wolfowitz’s case it means pals of Cheney, pundits and absolute cretins who lack credentials for the job. Does that sound familiar? You can be famous for doing nothing and apparently you can be successful too.
Military Will Keep Planting Articles in Iraq “The U.S. military plans to continue paying Iraqi newspapers to publish articles favorable to the United States after an inquiry found no fault with the controversial practice, the top U.S. general in Iraq said Friday.” In fact they plan to increase the effort elsewhere in the world. LAT implies that the Pentagon will “replicate the practise” but as we know, the U.S. has been doing this for a long time. Any brownshirts out there looking for a payday? I guess this solves the mystery of why not all articles about the U.S. and its policies are in fact negative in tone.
Seoul and Washington closer to divorce “South Korea and the US have drifted so far apart on North Korea policy there is now speculation the longtime partners are getting close to splitting up. Fueling that speculation is the recent friction between Seoul and Washington over how to deal with US allegations that North Korea is counterfeiting US dollars.”
Philippines: The power, not the Gloria “People power has been both a triumph and a failure in the Philippines. Twenty years ago, the people overthrew the dictator Marcos. Twenty years later, they are still to gain any material benefits, with real power and wealth remaining in the grip of the same old ruling elite. The present crisis is about much more than ousting President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo: it’s about excising the systemic rottenness at the core of the nation.”
Bush declares war on freedom of the press “Using many of the questionable surveillance and monitoring techniques that brought both questions and criticism to his administration, President George W. Bush has launched a war against reporters who write stories unfavorable to his actions and is planning to prosecute journalists to make examples of them in his ‘war on terrorism.’” It seems the U.S. government has started to seriously harass independent writers and bloggers, hoping to intimidate them, shut them down, turn up something incriminating or just bury them in paperwork.
Gulags For American Citizens In Final Planning Stages “Bush administration and US army preparations to target American citizens and intern them in forced labor camps has vastly accelerated in the past month and commentators from all over the political spectrum are sounding the alarm bells that the round-ups may begin soon.” Or is it “just” for Muslim immigrants? Prisonplanet points to some fairly interesting historical precedent, in terms of plans to round up subversives, that were for various reasons never implemented.
John Bolton Does AIPAC And Cheney too. No matter that the infamous pro-Israel lobbying group has two ex-officials prosecuted for espionage. Bolton also goes on about Iran’s alleged nuclear weapons program which he apparently has all figured out. The “clear and unrelenting drive” for a nuclear weapons program as he put it. Bolton and Olmert are also heard parroting each other in calling for ever more extreme measures to exterminate their enemies. All taking place in the AIPAC megachurch of zionism, holding some 5000 parasites on U.S. foreign policy. With those sort of numbers in their ranks, and in just one lobbying group mind you, no wonder that the situation is what it is.
