Ukraine dead end to US imperialists?

August 10th, 2006 at 09:30 Björn Hallberg

MK Bhadrakumar on the end of the Orange Revolution and would could hopefully also be the beginning of the end of American influence over or at least expansion in the region.

The appointment of Viktor Yanukovich as premier of Ukraine puts the final nail in the coffin of the “Orange Revolution” there and also in Washington’s geopolitical ambitions in the former Soviet republics. And forget about Ukraine joining NATO.

The choice is whether to do business with the incoming pro-Russian Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich or to destabilize him in the coming months by consorting with the mercurial opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko. The dilemma is acute insofar as Washington doesn’t have a genuine “taste” for either of the two Ukrainian leaders.

But NATO expansion is not merely an issue of Bush’s political legacy. If Ukraine holds back, NATO’s eastward expansion virtually stalls. Ukraine is too big to be bypassed. And no encirclement of Russia is realistic without Kiev coming on board.
